A gravity focused trip to the world class trails at Maydena

Maydena Gravity

Maydena is the largest bike park in the southern hemisphere all perched on the edge of World Heritage Wilderness.

Why Maydena?

Maydena boasts 73+ individual trails including beginner & family-friendly rides, wilderness trails and epic pro trails. All trails capitalise on the park’s unique rainforest environment and massive 820m vertical elevation, offering descents of all types, for all abilities.

This trip suits those who enjoy catching a shuttle up and riding down the hill…. if you haven’t tried it, it is A LOT of fun. We will split into different groups each day focusing primarily on green and blue trails with opportunities for extension for those who want more. You can read more about Maydena here

Itinerary

Day 1 - Arrive Hobart, Transfer to Maydena

We will pick you up from Hobart Airport at approximately 1:30 pm. From here the bus will collect anyone staying in the CBD before, a quick stop at a supermarket and bottleshop, then heading to Maydena. The aim is to be at our accommodation by approx. 5 pm with time to unpack and take a walk to spot some platypus. We will stay at the Giants Table and Cottages for our 4-night stay.

Day 2 - Maydena Part 1

Today we will explore this amazing bike park on the edge of World Heritage Wilderness. Rise and shine with a continental breakfast & coffee in your lodge. When you’re ready, a bike mechanic will help unbox and build your bike (if you brought your own), or get you set up on a hire bike if you ordered one of these. At 9:00 am we will ride the short distance to the impressive trailhead to begin our day. The trailhead has a cafe, bike shop and you pass through this spot many times during the day. We will start on the lower mountain together and then break into 3 different groups based on skill and confidence levels. When your quads can take no more, you can ride back to the accommodation to relax and unwind. We will have dinner here this evening.

Day 3 - Maydena Part 2

Rinse and repeat! We promise it is good. Today we will split into our groups to go and explore more of the mountain. Options will include the wilderness trail, tech features on more difficult trails and of course and easier option for those who would like it.

Day 4 - Maydena Part 3 or Mt Field National Park

For this day you have a couple of options. The first is you can head back to the bike park for a final action-filled day, again splitting into groups. For those who have had too much of a good thing, there is an option to go hiking nearby at one of Tasmania’s oldest and most diverse national parks, Mt Field. At the end of the day, it is time to pack the bikes away, with help from our guides, ready for transport. This is our final night with a special meal together.

Day 5 - MONA and return to Hobart

You can’t come to Hobart and not visit MONA, the Museum of Old and New Art. We head straight here in the morning for an exploration followed by lunch in the courtyard. The bus will then take you to the airport arriving at 2 pm. If you are staying in Hobart, you can also be dropped off at your accommodation. For those with early flights or who don’t want to visit MONA, there is an option to get you to the airport by 10:30 am.

Although this trip is different from our signature Women’s MTB Retreat in NE Tasmania, it is run with the same philosophy. Our aim by the end is to allow you to escape, connect and evolve.

  • Who is this trip suitable for?

To get the most out of this trip we recommend you are riding at an intermediate or an advanced level and the more confident you are, the more you will get out of the trip. Riding at this level will ensure you can head out on new trails each day. For more advanced riders there will be many options to extend your skills with our local guides. This trip isn’t suitable for a complete beginner or the super cautious. That being said, for some of our riders who only ride easy blue and green trails, this is one of their favourite destinations. If you are riding this level, it will mean you will be limited to the mid and lower mountain and be repeating trails over the 3 days. As in all our trips, we break into groups each day to suit.

If you are looking for a trip and you are a real beginner or super cautious, we suggest our Gravel and Greens retreat that visits Derby and St Helens. If you are a confident beginner or a hesitant blue trail rider, we recommend the Signature retreat.

  • What sort of a bike do I need?

For this trip we think you definitely need a full-suspension bike. No hard-tails. You also need some protective clothing, knee pads are a must and elbow pads are recommended. A full-face helmet is recommended but not mandatory. They can be hired from the bike park if you choose.

If you need to hire a bike we recommend you hire a gravity-focused bike direct from the bike park https://www.maydenabikepark.com/bike-hire/

Alternatively, you can hire one of our Liv Emboldens. These bikes are more of an all-around bike compared to the gravity but are still suitable for most green and blue trails. Bike hire info

You need to make sure your bike is recently serviced and bring some spare parts. We are heading to remote areas with limited support for bikes. We will have a bike mechanic along for the trip with some generic parts as we understand how important it is to keep you moving. As with all our trips, we are there to support you build and pack your bike out of the bag/box you transport it in.

  • Do I need a Full Face Helmet and Body Armour?

It is highly recommended to have a full face helmet, and knee and elbow pads for this trip. Both helmets and protective clothing can be hired direct from the bike park. https://www.maydenabikepark.com/bike-hire/

  • Is this a Women's Only Trip?

Certainly is! The trip is specifically designed for women, creating a safe and inclusive environment that fosters female empowerment. It offers a unique opportunity for women to connect, support each other, and embark on a journey of self-discovery and personal growth. So, yes, it is a women's only trip.

  • What is the group size for this trip?

The group will be between 12 to 16 riders and 4 staff. The group size enables us to split into ability levels and choose different routes to suit. We will have minimum 2 female bike guides, a bike mechanic and a driver to keep everyone moving

  • How do I book?

Head to our dates and inclusions page for details
